UK immunisation authority rejects calls to vaccinate UK teenagers

Teenagers in the United Kingdom will not receive the COVID-19 vaccine despite fears the return of face-to-face learning could result in a spike in case numbers.

In an assessment by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, the nation's immunisation authority, it was concluded the health benefits from the vaccine were only "marginally greater" than "potential known harms".

"The margin of benefit is considered too small to support universal vaccination of healthy 12 to 15 year olds at this time," a statement by Public Health England read.

"Given the very low risk of serious COVID-19 disease in otherwise healthy 12 to 15 year olds, considerations on the potential harms and benefits of vaccination are very finely balanced and a precautionary approach was agreed."
