Leona Maguire surges into the mix at Women’s British Open

almost 3 years in The Irish Times

Leona Maguire moved into the top 10 at the Women’s British Open on Friday as she fired a second round of 67 to get to five under par, two behind second round clubhouse leaders Mina Harigae and Georgia Hall.
Maguire was level par going into the day and needed a low round to pull herself into contention. And she did exactly that.
Three pars to start gave way to birdies at the fourth, fifth and seventh to go out in 33.
She picked up further shots at the 12th and 14th and finished with pars on the last four, including two tricky up and downs at the 16th and 17th to keep her card bogey-free.
Maguire secured her best Major finish so far in her career at last month’s Evian Championship when she shot a 61 on the final day.
With Solheim Cup qualification a real possibility for the Cavan golfer, the weekend at Carnoustie is big for a number of reasons.

Amateur Lauren Walsh, who is the only other Irish player in the field, also enjoyed a successful second round as she signed for a 69 to get to one under par and ensure that she will be in the mix for the weekend.
The Wake Forest scholar went out in one over par but turned it around with a scintillating finish. Birdies at the 11th and 12th got her under par for the day before she made birdies at the tough Par 4 17th and 18th to get into the clubhouse in a tie for 25th with the afternoon wave of players still to go out at Carnoustie.
Included in those later starters is world number one Nelly Korda who begins the day at five under while Madelene Sagstrom starts at the same mark.
