Roscommon stage remarkable comeback to beat Down in under 20 semi final

Roscommon 2-13 Down 1-10
A remarkable finale from Roscommon at Kingspan Breffni Park yielded 1-5 without reply and a place in next weekend’s EirGrid All-Ireland under-20 football final alongside Offaly.
Trailing by two points with 55 minutes on the clock, the Rossies had a mountain to climb but duly recovered with five points in a row followed by a stoppage-time goal from Adam McDermott.
It was the most unlikeliest of finales given that Down, managed by Conor Laverty and mentored by Marty Clarke and Seán Boylan, looked to be in pole position to secure a first final place since 2009.
Things went badly against the Mourne County, however, and they finished with just 13 men following straight red card dismissals for captain and goalscorer Shealan Johnston and midfielder Tom Close.
Fresh off an emotional Ulster final win over Monaghan, a game that went to extra-time, Down fell behind initially, though collected themselves and led for the most part.
James Fitzpatrick’s well-taken 11th-minute goal for Roscommon, when he played a neat give-and-go with Conor Lohan and punt-kicked to a gaping net on the goalkeeper’s right, had put the Connacht champions in the ascendancy.
Daire Cregg, who finished with 0-5, added back-to-back points for the Rossies to leave them 1-2 to 0-3 clear at the water break.
Down closed out the half strongly from there though and outscored Roscommon by 1-5 to 0-1 between the 21st minute and half-time to wrestle all the momentum back their way.
Johnston netted in stoppage-time, slamming home to the roof of the net from close range after an intricate passing move to put Down 1-7 to 1-5 ahead.
Roscommon edged the third quarter by a point but Down were unfortunate to see goal attempts from Danny Magill and Tom Smyth crash off the woodwork.
They were costly misses because Roscommon dominated the closing period, reeling off five points in a row from Cregg, Patrick Gavin, McDermott, James Fitzpatrick and Charlie Carthy before then netting.
Down goalkeeper Charlie Smyth played an adventurous outfield role for much of the game and was caught out late on by a Roscommon counterattack.
McDermott found himself clear on goal and shot into an empty net to the delight of the vocal Roscommon support who are now dreaming of a first All-Ireland win at the under-20/under-21 grade since 1978 ahead of the Croke Park final.
