My father-in-law was a miner. His ashes lie in Horden Cemetery alongside scores of others who went down nearby Easington colliery before it closed in 1993. It was the last to go in the once mighty Durham coalfield, home of the Durham Miners’ Gala which still has a place in the Labour Party’s revolutionary lore.
