Ireland’s Leona Maguire matched the record low score in Major championship golf after she carded a stunning 10-under 61 to take the clubhouse lead at the Evian Championship in France on Sunday.
The Tokyo-bound golfer started the final round 15 shots adrift of overnight leader Jeongeun Lee6 of South Korea, but 10 birdies later she had moved to 13 under and into fourth place, two shots off the leaders.
Lee6 shot a 61 in her second round to set a new record low Majors halfway total of 127 – 15 under par – and started the final round five shots clear of the field.
She added a birdie on the first hole of her final round but five bogeys saw her come back towards the field, with American teenager Yealimi Noh taking the lead on 15 under at the turn.
Maguire, 26, was already in the clubhouse, reflecting on a round where she opened with three birdies and closed with another four. An eagle on the last would have set a new record for women’s and men’s Majors but after finding the fringe of the green with her second of the par-5 18th, she rolled in the birdie to join Lee 6 and her South Korean compatriot Hyo Joo Kim in the 61 club, Kim’s 61 also coming at the Evian Championship in 2014.
South Africa’s Branden Grace holds the men’s mark after he carded a 62 at the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
