Ransacked, Burned Out Stores Scene in Downtown Pietermaritzburg After Looting

almost 3 years in news

There were new reports of looting in Johannesburg, Durban, and elsewhere around South Africa on July 13, as unrest continued in the wake of former President Jacob Zuma’s jailing. Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court amid corruption allegations, prompting days of violence and looting that have seen at least 45 people die, hundreds arrested, and numerous retail outlets ransacked. This video was shot in Pietermaritzburg, the second-largest city in Zuma’s native KwaZula-Natal province, where News24 said some looters were armed, and some stores were so thoroughly looted that even the doors were taken.
