Rory McIlroy set to miss cut at Scottish Open as Jon Rahm leads

Rory McIlroy was set to miss the cut at the Scottish Open after a second round of level par 71 left him at one under for the tournament at the Renaissance Club.
With the cut projected at two under and potentially set to move to three, it was far from the ideal preparation for McIlroy ahead of next week’s British Open at Royal St George’s.
After a bizarre incident on the 10th tee - McIlroy’s first hole of the day - when a spectator came onto the tee box and took the headcover from McIlroy’s driver as well as taking one of his irons, the four-time Major winner never quite got going in another lacklustre round which was at odds with playing partner Jon Rahm who fired a 65 to take the clubhouse lead at 11 under.

McIlroy did pick up an early birdie at the 13th and another at the 18th to go out in 33 but that work was undone on the back nine with three bogeys - and one further birdie - to leave him a long way off the pace and facing a weekend off.
Rahm, on the other hand, has shown no let-up in his first appearance since winning the US Open. The Spaniard reeled off six birdies on his front nine to reach the turn at six under par for the day before adding another at the first. Bogeys at the second and fourth stunted his progress slightly but he picked up another birdie at the seventh before finishing with two pars in a row to reach 11 under.
Three shots back is Justin Thomas who signed for a round of 69 while Ian Poulter is also in the group at eight under after a 68.
