The first phase of repairs to the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail has been completed and the popular stretch between between Mystic Beach and Bear Beach has reopened to hikers.
B.C. Parks announced this week that the 8.9-kilometre section of the trail has reopened with temporary ladder facilities in place after a washout due to heavy rains in March rendered a section of stairs unusable. The trail reopened on June 7, but was closed two weeks later after a landslide made the trail impassable. Bypass routes were not available due to steep cliffs in the area.
“The ladder may be challenging for some hikers, especially those travelling with pets, so please use caution when crossing any built structure,” B.C. Parks said in a statement.
The next phase of the project will result in the closure of the same passage between Mystic Beach and Bear Beach for several weeks starting Oct. 1. The project is scheduled to be fully completed by the fall.
