Wehby opens State of the Nation Debate today

THE House of Representatives concluded its Sectoral Debate at Gordon House last week, and today the Senate will commence its State of the Nation Debate.
Opening the debate will be Government Senator Don Wehby, who is also the chairman of Jamaica Promotions (Jampro).
Senator Wehby, who first joined the Senate in 2007, is group chief executive officer at GraceKennedy Limited. He was made a minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service by former Prime Minister Bruce Golding in his 2007-2011 Administration, but resigned relatively early to rejoin GraceKennedy Limited as group CEO.
Also down to speak today is the Opposition's spokesperson on tourism, Senator Janice Allen, a well known St James personality who has worked in several public and private institutions, including Jamaica Tourist Board, Jampro, Digicel and Cable & Wireless. Senator Allen was originally appointed to the Senate by the former Leader of the Opposition Dr Peter Phillips, and was retained with the same responsibilities by his successor Mark Golding.
The debate will give Cabinet ministers in the Senate an opportunity to address their portfolio responsibilities while highlighting Government policies and programmes. Most Opposition senators choose topics on which they wish to speak and are not necessarily constrained by portfolio responsibilities, while Cabinet and junior ministers usually focus on their ministerial responsibilities.
The Senate, which starts at 10:00 am, will also debate a Bill shortly entitled, The Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (Amendment) Validation and Indemnity) Act, 2021.
