Labor “in principle” agree with the free trade agreement between the United Kingdom and Australia but the “devil is in the details”, according to Shadow Early Childhood Education Minister Amanda Rishworth.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the deal on Tuesday, the first new trade deal the UK has made since leaving the European Union.

“We in principle agree with this free trade deal with the UK,” she said.

“We will of course have to go through the details when it comes to this agreement and of course make sure it’s in the national interest of Australian workers, Australian businesses and the community.

“In principle, we support these sorts of agreements being struck but you know the devil is always in the details and we will have to look at that very carefully.

“It certainly seems to on the face of it have some important steps to strengthening our ties with Britain and so I think that’s a good thing.

“We’d like to see the government do a lot more of these agreements”.
