One of the first laws in “big school” economics that farmers have drummed into them from an early age is that free trade is a bad thing. This dictum can be traced back in their genes to the period between the First and Second World Wars when the import doors of the UK were flung open allowing grain, meat and dairy produce to flood into this country.
