The opening of a village of tiny homes to house people experiencing homelessness has been moved to Friday due to delays in the delivery of fire-alarm panels.
Future residents of the one-room homes on a parking lot adjacent to Royal Athletic Park are “already packed up and ready to go,” said Grant McKenzie, director of communications for Our Place, which will oversee the 30 shipping containers that have been converted into living spaces.
“It is really disappointing for everyone,” said McKenzie, who expects the fire-alarm panels to arrive and be installed on Wednesday, with the fire marshal carrying out the final inspection for occupancy on Thursday.
Each resident will occupy a housing unit measuring 160 square feet and equipped with a bed, desk, hot plate and refrigerator. Residents share common shower and washroom facilities.
Our Place will have staff and security on-site 24/7.
The first wave of 10 new residents is set to move in on Friday morning, with the remainder arriving on Saturday and Sunday.
