Fire crews evacuated buildings close to a gas leak near the intersection of Fort and Ormond streets Monday afternoon, the deputy fire chief said.
Dan Atkinson said firefighters responded to a call just before 1 p.m. that a construction crew struck an underground gas line, causing a “fairly significant” leak.
Buildings within about a block of the area were evacuated as a precaution, he said.
Central Middle School, just down the street from the leak, is not affected, Atkinson said.
Fortis B.C. crews arrived around 1:30 p.m. and are trying to determine how to bring the leak under control, said Jas Baweja, corporate communications specialist for Fortis B.C. Seven customers are without natural gas as a result of the leak.
Abstract Developments said in a statement their construction site is closed and WorkSafe B.C. has been contacted. No one was injured by the leak, the company said.
The area is closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic at the intersections of Fort and Cook, View and Cook, Linden and Rockland and Yates and Ormond.
Anyone in the area who smells rotten eggs should leave and go to fresh air, Atkinson said.
