Cancer patient Kim Francois, 22, is thankful for the “outpouring of overwhelming support” from the public after Newsday highlighted her illness.
It’s been four months since she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a form of blood cancer.
She has shared her story on social media, which has garnered thousands of views, likes and shares. She also started a GoFundMe page to raise US$50,000 for a stem cell transplant.
She is currently at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), Champ Fleurs.
On Monday, Newsday published an article about her experience thus far.
She recalled constantly feeling unwell in September 2020, which worried her friends and family. She also lost a lot of weight, which caused remarks from people including, “I had HIV/AIDS, I throw away child and that is why I am sick.
“It was really hateful things they were saying.”
She said she was even reluctant to share her story at one point.
But after meeting several supportive people, and two near-death experiences, including a blood infection that left her bedridden and a with blood clot in her leg, she realised her story had the potential to inspire others.
Speaking with Newsday on Monday afternoon, Francois said physically, she was a bit weak, owing to a low blood count, but mentally, she felt good.
“Everybody is just reaching out, and they are just so supportive. A lot of people are calling and messaging, some people prayed with me, others just sent a lot of love and positivity…
“It is really, really heart-warming and just so overwhelming right now. I am so thankful to you all for reaching out to highlight my story.”
She hopes to raise US$50,000 because her doctor recommended she has a stem cell transplant if the chemotherapy does not work and her illness does not go into remission.
She said this was her second round of induction therapy as it did not kill enough cancer cells the first time.
Francois has also been actively sharing fundraising pages and local posts about other cancer patients in need of help to her Facebook page.
Her own GoFundMe page has raised over US$5,000 so far. Those interested in donating via GoFundMe can visit: https://www.gofundme.com/f/helping-kim-fight-cancer?
Donations can also be made to a Scotiabank account under her name, account number 3611905, transit number 90415.
She can also be reached at 272-3197.
