Infectious Diseases Expert Professor Peter Collignon says "if we want to stop all spread of COVID-19" - that is an elimination strategy - vaccines are not the answer, stating we're going to have to live with the virus.
"Yes, we have eliminated this virus repeatedly, but it's so easy to come back," he said.
"We do need to get all the adults in Australia vaccinated or try to by the end of the year. But the vaccines don't give you 100 per cent protection.
"We're going to have to, at some stage - after we've protected the people who are most likely to die - come to the view some amount of virus spread is something we'll have to live with."
