Republicans ‘in crisis’ as Trump sets himself up as kingmaker

Sky News contributor Michael Ware says the Republican Party is “tearing apart” as former president Donald Trump sets himself up as the kingmaker ahead of the 2022 congressional elections.

Mr Trump has pledged to support Republican campaigns ahead of the next elections but launched a scathing attack upon establishment figures at a recent RNC high donor meeting.

The gathering in question was held in Florida and attendees spent the last night of the retreat at Mr Trump’s resort where he delivered a speech which addressed a list of grievances regarding the 2020 election.

Mr Ware said the former president launched a scathing on Mitch McConnell and former vice president Mike Pence.

“This weekend was a glaring illustration of the dynamics at play within the Republican party," he said.

“The fact that the RNC wanted to be near Trump but not with him and yet include him right at the end indicates how precarious the path forward is.”
