Spiked Online's Brendan O'Neill says UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is "backtracking" after being a famous opponent of ID cards, but supporting the idea of a vaccine passport.

"Boris Johnson has sort of backtracked on this issue. He is a famous opponent of ID cards... he once said, when Tony Blair was proposing to bring ID cards to the UK, he would eat his if a policeman ever asked him to produce it," he said.

"He said we're not a 'papers please society' so we shouldn't have these kinds of IDs. He's backtracking now with the idea of a vaccine passport.

"I'm not opposed to vaccine passports in terms of crossing international borders. I think states must have the right to determine that someone is coming into their country and doesn't have COVID-19.

"The problem with the UK is a vaccine passport would be domestic. You would need it to go to the cinema, to go to certain restaurants... it redefines the relationship between the individual and society."
