After a COVID reprieve, 2022 could see ‘a resurgence in terrorism’

Professor Clive Williams says 2022 could be a year the world begins to see a resurgence in terrorism as COVID-19 lockdowns and border closures have delayed any opportunities for extremist groups to carry out acts of terror.
"The fact that there aren't so many Australians vulnerable at the moment overseas has been very beneficial. We don't have crowds very often, that's sort of been a protective factor," he said.
"The thing is, Islamic State and Al Qaeda have not gone away. They're certainly biding their time for when they can be active again.
"They've been very pleased with what's been happening in the United States. They almost see COVID-19 as being a warrior for themselves.
"This has given them a period where they can actually start to regenerate and I think next year we'll actually start to see a resurgence in terrorism."
