Covid19 UK variant found in five on ship in Trinidad and Tobago

Five covid19 cases among foreigners aboard a ship were positive for the UK variant, the Health Ministry reported on Friday.
The variant was detected in samples sent to the University of the West Indies for genetic sequencing, the ministry said in an advisory issued shortly after 8 pm. The samples were taken on March 23 and the ship left the next day. However, no one left the vessel during that period, the ministry said.
"All five samples sequenced revealed the presence of the B117 variant (the UK variant)," the ministry said.
"These samples were taken from foreign nationals aboard a sea vessel on March 23rd, 2021. Upon receipt of the positive results; all five (5) samples were sent via the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) to the University of the West Indies (UWI) Laboratory.
"It must be noted that none of these persons were allowed to disembark the vessel as per the national quarantine protocol. Subsequently, the vessel left our waters on March 24th, 2021."
The ministry did not identify the nationalities of those on the ship, nor where it came from and was headed to.
The first case of the variant reported in TT was detected in a national who returned from the UK in January.
Health officials have since said the person recovered and the variant was not found among the population.
The news comes as the country recorded 112 cases and three deaths in the past three days.
