Biden may bypass Congress to pass assault weapons ban

about 3 years in news

US President Joe Biden is calling on Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons following a mass shooting in Colorado – which saw 10 people killed during a shooting spree in a grocery store.

The president, however, is facing strong opposition from members of both parties.

“The United States Senate … should immediately pass the two house pass bills that close loopholes in the background checks system,” President Biden said.

“I hate to say it because we say it so often, my heart goes out, our hearts go out for the survivors.”

Asked whether he would support the bills, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin said he definitely would not – which may prompt the Biden administration to bypass Congress altogether.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki addressed the issue, saying “we are certainly considering a range of levers, including working through legislation, including executive actions.”
