WEST Indies batsman Lendl Simmons has sent his condolences to the family of one of his biggest fans – 14-year-old Cedros student Matthew Sookoo, who was found drowned on Monday.
Matthew fell overboard in a boat accident on Saturday at Cedros Bay. His body was found by members of the Coast Guard on Monday morning.
He loved sports and his favourite was cricket.
His father Marlon had told Newsday Simmons was his son’s favourite cricketer and Sookoo even wore the number 54 when playing for the Point Fortin East Secondary School in his honour.

In a Facebook post on Monday night, Simmons wrote: “Today, the sad news was received today that Matthew Sookoo passed away today at age 14.
“It was brought to my attention that he was a young talented sportsman and a lover of cricket. I was also told that I was one of his favourite cricketers and it saddens me that we never had the opportunity to meet.”
He continued, “I cannot imagine the pain your family is going through but I pray they are comforted during this devastating time. Bat on, buddy! Gone too soon #Matthew54.”
The post was accompanied by a Newsday photo of Matthew’s sports awards.
