JobKeeper will end but the Morrison government’s support ‘does not’ Treasurer

While the JobKeeper program comes to an end, the Morrison government’s support “does not,” according to Treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

During Question Time on Wednesday, Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers hit out at the federal government over the JobKeeper program, accusing it of treating the people “about to lose their jobs” as a “political problem rather than a human one”.

The JobKeeper program is set to finish at the end of March.

Responding to the accusation from Mr Chalmers, Josh Frydenberg said “spare me the feigned indignation”.

“The JobKeeper payment was always meant to be a temporary one, initially it was planned for six months and we extended it for twelve months,” he said.

“At $90 billion, it’s the single largest economic support program any Australian government has ever undertaken.”

The treasurer said that while the program ends, the “Morrison governments support does not”.

“The Morrison government’s support continues with the recent aviation and tourism package, designed to provide low cost airfares and low cost loans.”
