The Australian’s Paul Kelly says WA’s Liberal Party has been taken to the “edge of extinction” following Mark McGowan’s landslide win for Labor.

Mr Kelly told Sky News Mark McGowan will be “dominate in the West for many years”, adding it’s the “biggest election victory in Australian political history”.

“The Labor Party looks set to have 52 seats in the new parliament, the Liberals will be reduced to two or three,” he said.

“The National Party is likely to be the official opposition and the Labor Party will control both Houses of Federal Parliament.

“This a tribute to Mark McGowan’s commitment to stable and competent government, he of course has been highly popular.

“It’s above all a tribute to the tough line he’s taken in terms of managing the virus and the closed border policy that he has championed”.

Mr Kelly also said the landslide election win is not “just about borders” but also revealed how the Liberal Party in the West needs to be “significantly repaired”.
