In 1829, Sir Walter Scott, President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), called a meeting of the RSE Council to discuss a proposal from Dr Robert Knox based on his anatomical research. The timing was a problem, as Dr. Knox was reputed to be procuring specimens from William Burke, the body snatcher.
