Carson’s speech

over 4 years in The Irish Times

Sir, – Dr Larry Fullam suggests that because the Dubliner Sir Edward Carson went to school at Portarlington, “he woulda haddah flah aaxint”(Letters, February 10th).
According to the same logic, Carson’s contemporary Oscar Wilde must have acquired a strong Fermanagh accent during his seven years at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen.
The idea is amusing but not, I fear, convincing. – Yours, etc,
CDC ARMSTRONG,
Belfast.
