The man who died in an early morning crash in Saanich last week has been identified by family as Christopher McNutt.
Saanich police responded to a call about a two-vehicle crash 5200 block of West Saanich Road near Prospect Lake Road at 7:35 a.m. Thursday.
The driver of a small black Honda CRX died at the scene, police said, while the driver of a white Dodge Ram pickup truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Neither driver had passengers.
The road was closed for hours while investigators and the coroners service investigated.
McNutt, whose nickname was Willy, is described on an online fundraising page as a car lover adept at fixing things.
Jody Bedwell, who organized the fundraiser, said McNutt and her sister Kristy have been sweethearts since high school.
“Kristy is my sister and she’s the most beautiful person with such a big heart and wouldn’t ask for anything,” wrote Bedwell. “She has been there for all her friends and family when we need her and I just want her not to have to worry about anything during this tough time.”
In another fundraiser for funeral expenses, Graham Hill said McNutt, his stepson, should have had his whole life ahead of him. “Sadly, he was taken far too early at the age of 31.”
Hill said McNutt was a generous and kind-hearted man willing to give of himself to help others. He leaves his surviving fiancée “in dire circumstances and unfortunately significantly unprepared — emotionally and financially,” Hill wrote.
“Willy and his fiancée still looked to life ahead, without dwelling on life’s possible end,” Hill said.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances and cause of the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 250-475-4321.
