40 years ago, 52 American hostages, imprisoned in Iran for 443 days, were released after protracted negotiations and an abortive rescue attempt. The hostage crisis paralysed the Carter Administration for months, and is believed to have played a major part in Carter's defeat by Ronald Reagan in the presidential elections.
