Dr Anthony Fauci received a dose of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine at an event held at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, on December 22. Fauci, who is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was vaccinated on stage along with Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar and Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health. Several frontline health care workers were also vaccinated at the event. “For me it’s important for two reasons,” said Fauci, who will turn 80 on Christmas Eve. “I am an attending physician here on the staff at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, and so I do see patients.” Fauci added, “As important or more important is as a symbol to the rest of the country that I feel extreme confidence in the safety and the efficacy of this vaccine and I want to encourage everyone who has the opportunity to get vaccinated so that we can have a veil of protection over this country that would end this pandemic.” This footage, streamed live by the National Institutes of Health, shows Fauci receiving the first of two shots he will receive as part of a full Moderna vaccine course.
