INVESTIGATIONS are continuing into an incident involving police and armed suspects which ended with one man being killed and two others wounded following a high speed chase and shootout in Arouca on Monday night.
Police were on patrol at around 8.25 pm when they tried to stop a white Nissan Tiida. The driver sped off and police followed along Golden Grove Road and then onto the Churchill Roosevelt Highway east towards the Maloney traffic lights, where the car ran a red light and made a U-turn onto another lane of the highway.
The driver then ran another red light at the Piarco intersection and stopped after the Oropune walkover. Two men got out of the car and reportedly began shooting at police. The officers returned fire as the two men ran away into some bushes.
Police found three other men in the car bleeding from gunshot wounds and took them to the hospital, where one of them later identified as Keith Wilson, was declared dead on arrival. The other two remain hospitalised under police guard.
Up to late on Monday night, members of the Arouca Crime Patrol, Northern Division Task Force, Emergency Response Patrol and Canine Unit were searching for the other two men who remain at large.
Police said they found a trail of blood in the bushes suggesting at least one of the two suspects was wounded. They also found and seized 32 spent shells. Northern Division police are continuing enquiries.
