Nicholls century puts New Zealand on top

HENRY Nicholls made the West Indies pay for missed opportunities as New Zealand closed day one of the second Test match in the driver’s seat in Wellington, on Friday.
Nicholls, who was dropped twice by Darren Bravo at first slip, ended the day on 117 not out to steer New Zealand to 294/6 at the close.
Nicholls lived a charmed life as Shamarh Brooks dropped a tough chance fielding at short leg and Jermaine Blackwood, fielding at fine leg, misjudged a catch which went for six.
Nicholls struck 15 fours and one six in his 207-ball innings. Will Young and Daryl Mitchell also contributed to the total with scores of 43 and 42 respectively.
West Indies had a strong first session as fast bowler Shannon Gabriel grabbed two wickets to leave New Zealand 82/3 at lunch. Fast bowler Chemar Holder and wicket-keeper Joshua Da Silva, both making their Test debut, combined to remove Tom Latham for 27 in the opening session.
New Zealand dominated the second and third session with Nicholls leading the way.
BJ Watling (30) and Mitchell gave Nicholls support in the second half of the day’s play. Gabriel ended the day with 3/57 in 18 overs and Holder took 2/65 in 18 overs. Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph snatched the other wicket as he ended with 1/65 in 17 overs.
