QPCC Jnr Table Tennis tournament starts Friday

THE Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) Junior Invitation Table Tennis tournament will serve off at the QPCC Racquet Centre and Youth Training Development Centre, at 4 pm, on Friday.
Matches will be held on Friday from 4 pm to 8 pm. On Saturday, matches will be played throughout the day from 9 am to noon, 12.30 pm to 4.30 pm and from 5.30 pm to 9.30 pm.
On Sunday’s closing day, matches will be contested from 10 am to noon, then from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Participants will compete in the Under-18, Under-15, Under-13 and Under-11 categories.
A total of 60 youngsters will be in action during the tournament.
Some of the national junior players who will be competing are Nicholas Lee, Nicholas O’Young, Derron Douglas, Imani Edwards-Taylor, Malik Gopaul, Jamali Mauge and Chloe Fraser. The Under-11 category will feature six year old Rukha Smith and seven year old Ryan Stewart.
Boys and girls will compete against each other.
The tournament will be beneficial for athletes preparing for 2021, according to tournament official Aaron Edwards.
“Our main objective for having the tournament is to get the youths back in tournament mode,” Edwards said.
“A lot of kids are now happy to be back that’s why we got so much persons entering.”
Edwards, who is the head coach of Queen’s Park Table Tennis club, said the tournament will be valuable practice for tentative national and regional tournaments in 2021. It is uncertain how many national and regional tournaments will be held in 2021 because of covid19.
Prizes will be distributed for the top finishers and in each age group an MVP award will be given. All International Table Tennis Federation covid19 protocols will be observed.
