A woman died and a man was airlifted to hospital after a single-vehicle crash near Port Hardy on Saturday.
RCMP said a southbound vehicle on Highway 19 crashed into a ditch north of the Port Alice junction at about 11 a.m. Saturday.
A female passenger was declared dead at the scene and the male driver was airlifted to a Victoria hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The crash closed Highway 19 in both directions until after 5 p.m. as police and firefighters investigated the scene, about 20 kilometres south of Port Hardy.
Port Alice RCMP Const. Rebekah Draht said in a statement that the vehicle drove onto the right shoulder in the southbound lane, veered into the northbound lane and crashed into a ditch.
Police said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash and the matter is still under investigation.
