There were 738 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. on Wednesday, including 21 in Island Health.

That brings the number of active cases in the province to 7,616, of whom 294 are in hospital, including 16 in intensive or critical care. Another 10,270 people are isolating and being monitored for the virus.

Around the province there are 169 new cases in Vancouver Coastal, 443 in Fraser Health, 70 in Interior Health, and 35 in Northern Health.

Another 13 have died for a total of 371 people who have died of COVID-19 in B.C.

The regional data for Island Health has not yet been posted.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, asked British Columbians to urgently reduce their social interactions to bring down spiking transmissions across the province.

B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix supported the health officer, advising anyone unsure about the orders: “When in doubt, rule it out.”

Henry highlighted B.C.’s mandatory mask order for people in public spaces and indoor retail spaces and the fines for non-compliance. But she also asked people to be compassionate toward those who cannot wear them and to understand the rules, noting, for instance, that children under 12 are not required to wear them.

Now, more than ever, “we need to care for each other,” she said.

More to come
