Quite by accident, Damien Hirst found himself well prepared for lockdown. Last year Britain’s most influential — and richest — artist slimmed down the huge army of staff and hangers-on that had grown up around the creation and sale of his bisected animals, spin and dot paintings and pill cabinets, and embarked alone on a series of 90 cherry blossom paintings in a rented Hammersmith studio.
