Brussels was never going to allow Britain’s internal market bill, which it says breaches international law, to go uncontested
So the European commission has raised the stakes. It has begun the rather lengthy process of article 258 enforcement proceedings against the UK. But the truth is, this was on the cards as soon as the UK published the internal market bill on 9 September 2020.
The bill was always going to cause trouble in Brussels. As Brandon Lewis, secretary of state for Northern Ireland admitted in the Commons, it breaches international law in a “specific and limited way”. Continue reading...
