Victoria police are warning the public about a dangerous high-risk sex offender who is at large.
Scott Jones is a court-designated dangerous offender with a history of violent sex offences.
He is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large. Victoria police did not say where he was last seen. The department also did not say whether Jones was living in a halfway house in Greater Victoria or elsewhere in the province.
Jones was sentenced to five years in prison after he was convicted of rape, gross indecency and attempted rape of three girls in 1982, according to court documents. While on parole in 1986, he was charged with three counts of sexual assault with a weapon and three counts of unlawful confinement. He pleaded guilty to one count each of sexual assault and sexual assault with a weapon. The trial judge declared Jones a dangerous offender and gave him an indeterminate sentence, which means he will be incarcerated as long as he poses a serious risk to public safety.
Jones appealed his dangerous offender designation to the Supreme Court of Canada but his appeal was dismissed in 1994.
Jones is described as a 56-year-old Caucasian man standing five feet two inches tall, and weighing approximately 150 pounds. He has short grey or balding hair with green eyes. He was last seen wearing a black rain jacket, jeans, and a white bike helmet. He may be riding a new electric scooter.
Anyone who sees Jones should not approach him but immediately call 911. Anyone with information about Jones or his whereabouts should call Victoria police’s non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 and press 1 for the report desk. To report anonymously, call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
