CANDLE LAKE, Sask. — RCMP say a teen was shot and killed over the weekend in a Saskatchewan lake community and the suspected gunman committed suicide.
Police say the 49-year-old man had a firearm and was assaulting a woman at a home in Candle Lake, about 225 kilometres north of Saskatoon, on Saturday night.
Other people in the home tried to intervene in the assault and the 14-year-old boy was shot dead.
Mounties say another man was able to get the gun away from the shooter, but he quickly fled the area.
Officers later learned the man had gone to another home in the resort village.
Police went to that house early Sunday and found the man dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
RCMP say no one else was in the home. Three others who had been in the house when the teen was killed were not seriously injured.
More than 10,000 people typically visit Candle Lake during the summer, but about 840 call it home year-round. Many seasonal businesses had closed for winter the weekend before the shooting.
Mayor Terry Kostyn confirmed on the close-knit community's Facebook page Monday that there had been a tragedy.
"Our focus as a municipality is on well-being of our community," Kostyn's statement said. "We are actively making arrangements to provide access to counselling and resources for anyone affected by these tragic events."
