REGINA — A constituency association in Regina is challenging a decision by the Saskatchewan NDP to replace a former cabinet minister as a candidate in the upcoming provincial election.
Barb Dedi, president of the NDP's constituency group in Regina Walsh Acres, says she was shocked after the party called two weeks ago about a new nomination date when there was already a candidate in place.
Sandra Morin had won a contested nomination to represent the party in Walsh Acres in the October election.
She held the seat from 2003 to 2011, and served as a minister of culture, youth and recreation while the NDP was in government.
Dedi says she learned from the party that the decision to drop Morin came from leader Ryan Meili.
She says she was also told the reason was confidential.
"We have not been given any reasons," Dedi said Wednesday.
"We are doing everything to keep Sandra as our candidate and we are challenging the decision of the party."
John Tzupa, provincial secretary and CEO of the Saskatchewan NDP, has said that the party will be nominating a new candidate for the constituency and internal matters are confidential.
Dedi said she and others want an explanation.
"I’ve been working in this party for 42 years … I’ve never, ever heard of or seen anything to this likeness before," she said.
"We had the Erin Weir situation, but he was given reasons to why the leader wanted him to step down."
Weir, a former Regina member of Parliament, was booted from the NDP caucus in 2018 and blocked from running under the party's banner because of harassment complaints.
