The public is invited to weigh in on proposed changes to a 1.7-kilometre stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway in Goldstream Provincial Park.

The improvements are intended to make travel from Victoria to Duncan more reliable, and to increase the safety of people visiting Goldstream.

Proposed measures include:Widening and minor alignment changes to allow for installation of median barriers, larger paved shoulders and an upgrade to the Finlayson Arm Road intersection.Enhancement of an existing trail overlooking the Goldstream River and parallel to the highway, improved parking, a pedestrian bridge over the river and a pedestrian structure for crossing the highway.

There are no plans to add lanes on this stretch of the highway, which has one lane in each direction.

The engagement process continues through Sept. 20. Questions and feedback are invited at www.gov.bc.ca/malahatsafetyimprovements.

About 60 per cent of the Malahat corridor now has median barriers. Medians have not been installed in the Goldstream portion or along a four-kilometre stretch between Bamberton and Split Rock viewpoint.

During the summer, more than 29,000 vehicles drive through the Goldstream park daily.
