Victoria police are at a Cook Street residential complex where they believe more than one suspect is inside a suite after a report of a robbery at the building about 7:45 a.m. today.

A victim was injured with an undisclosed weapon and taken to hospital with what are thought to be non-life-threatening injuries, said Const. Cam MacIntyre.

Persons believed to be suspects in the incident have barricaded themselves inside a suite in the building, police said.

Cook Street between Bay Street and Queens Avenue, near George Jay Elementary School, has been closed to traffic and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team has been called in, MacIntyre said.

A loud bang could be heard in the area about when police used a "distraction device" about 11 a.m.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area.
