Energy Minister Angus Taylor says regardless of the outcome, the uncertainty of the result means the Eden-Monaro by-election "is a victory for the government, and it is a disaster for Anthony Albanese”.

Mr Taylor’s comment responded to increasing optimism among supporters of Liberal Eden-Monaro candidate Fiona Kotvojs, for a Liberal victory.

The by-election outcome will be decided by pre-poll and postal votes yet to be counted.

Speaking on the future of the Labor party, Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell said “they are either going to have to change their leader or their going to have to change direction”.

“The concern for Albanese is that they will have to change leader and direction,” he said.
