The acting Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly says he will convene an emergency teleconference meeting of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee as Victoria records a worrying increase in COVID-19 cases.
Australia has recorded 113 new cases in last 24 hours, 108 from a Victoria alone, while the other five were in NSW.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has taken the radical step to lockdown 3,000 residents in nine public housing estates in the north of Melbourne, while increasing the number of postcodes locked down to 12.
There have been a total of 2.6 million COVID-19 tests done since the start of the pandemic, with 50,000 tests taken in the last 24 hours alone.
Although Victoria’s cases have increased rapidly over the past week, there still remains only 29 patients in hospital with 25 coming from Victoria.
“Rising number of active cases in Victoria is the major concern at the moment,” he said.
Professor Kelly said while the rising cases are so-far isolated to Melbourne, resources and assistance will be provided to Victoria from federal and state governments.
“We see this as a combined effort to assist our Victorian colleagues in whatever way that we can”.
