New prime minister appointed in France

France has a new prime minister after President Emmanuel Macron tasked Jean Castex with forming a new government following the departure of Edouard Phillipe.

Mr Castex is a top civil servant and local mayor who orchestrated the country's exit from coronavirus lockdown.

Mr Phillipe, who has held the position since 2017, resigned as part of a cabinet reshuffle, despite seeing his popularity increase in recent weeks.
