Biden’s ‘virtue signalling over substance’ campaign reflected in VP selections

If US presidential hopeful Joe Biden’s election campaign prioritises “virtue signaling and symbols,” he may find his road to the oval office more fraught with difficulty than anticipated, former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says.

Mr Biden’s campaign team have confirmed they are vetting a racially diverse selection of women to serve as vice president.

The top four in the running are reportedly: senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, Congressional Rep Val Demings and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Mr Downer said Kamala Harris would have to be a strong favourite for the position because “she meets all the criteria they are looking for in an era of identity politics”.

He told Sky News host Peta Credlin identity politics had proved “to be incredibly divisive”.

“If Joe Biden just wants virtue signaling and symbols rather than running good candidates, then he might find it difficult to win the election,” he said.

Mr Downer said despite Mr Biden's favourable position on the polls, he will soon come under a lot of pressure once he engages in debate with President Donald Trump.
