Former Pentagon advisor Jason Israel says Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s defence announcement is the most recent action in a global “arms race”.
The Prime Minister announced on Wednesday a $270 billion boost to Australia’s strategic defence capabilities in the shadow of growing foreign cyber and security threats.
“If you think of a pattern of developing a weapon, which countries are developing it, which countries aren’t, which countries can develop defences for it and which countries aren’t, that’s the classic definition of an arms race,” Mr Israel told Sky News.
“Countries are starting to announce and show that they’re putting some money towards that," he said.
