A statue of Christopher Columbus was removed from outside the Columbus, Ohio, city hall on Wednesday, July 1, after the city’s mayor, Andrew Ginther, called for it to come down. Mayor Ginther announced on June 18 that the statue would be removed because the monument “does not represent our great city, and we will no longer live in the shadow of our ugly past.” This video shows the 22-foot-tall monument being lifted onto a flatbed after it was taken down. The city asked the Columbus Art Commission to launch a community-driven process that embraces diversity to determine how to replace the statue, according to local media reports.
