Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced $5,000 cash grants for businesses forced to close in the 10 postcodes, under the new lockdowns announced on Tuesday.

Mr Andrews revealed the radical stage three restrictions will be enforced from 11.59pm Wednesday night in a desperate bid to take back control of the state's surging coronavirus outbreak.

“These are extraordinary steps, these are not things we have had to do in the past but such is the nature of this virus, it is so wildly infectious that if we don't take these steps now we will finish up in a situation than locking down ten post codes we will be locking down every postcode,” he said.

The decision came after 64 cases of coronavirus were detected across the state overnight, with none identified as returned travellers in hotel quarantine.

The figure adds to the $10,000 that the majority of businesses have already accessed under the state’s business support program.
