Australia seeing ‘unintended consequences’ of government handouts

Sky News host Rowan Dean says the welfare state should help the disadvantaged and those who've fallen on hard times but right now we are seeing the unintended consequences of the government handing out "free money".

“Our fiscal support of the economy is unprecedented, when you’re burning through cash at a rate of almost $11 billion a month on JobKeeper then obviously that is not something you can continue on that form forever," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday.

“That’s why the government is being very careful in the considerations we’re having, we’re not rushing to any decisions, we’re working carefully through all the various elements," he had said.

"The reality is we've now addicted an awful lot of people onto welfare and that always ends up ... people get addicted to free money and you can't get them off it," Mr Dean told Sky News host Paul Murray.

"Of course, I have no problem with the welfare state that looks after the disadvantaged and people who've fallen on hard times," he said.

However, he said "we know that people are getting more money on JobKeeper than before when they were in work".

"We know for example that there are some people that have been getting JobSeeker and JobKeeper.

"There are unintended consequences the moment the government starts giving away money and we are seeing those unintended consequences.

"And they are costing the taxpayer a fortune and they are costing people their livelihoods and their jobs."
