NSW school curriculum to teach students ‘how to think’ not ‘what to think’

The NSW education syllabus overhaul will remove subjects such as puppetry and lifestyle studies in favour of content which helps students either transition to further study or move into the workforce, NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell says.

“We think there is at least 20 per cent which can go straight away,” she told Sky News host Paul Murray.

She said this would allow younger students to focus on the basics and senior students to study subjects which would help them practically in their future career.

Ms Mitchell said instead of inculcating a certain worldview into the school curriculum and teaching students “what to think,” the new curriculum would teach students “how to think”.

“You want them to look at a subject knowledge area, study it critically and have that compassion and ability to have rational discourse and come up with their own point of view,” she said.
