Tourism industry ‘tearing its hair out’ over state border closures

Australian Tourism Industry Council Simon Westaway says the national cabinet has an opportunity to resolve rising border tensions as it will force discussion between state and territory leaders on the roadmap out of the coronavirus crisis.
Western Australia and South Australia's leaders expressed concern over reopening their borders after Victoria saw a surge in the number of virus infections.
Mr Westaway told Sky News Victoria's spike in cases should not be a roadblock for state leaders planning to ease border restrictions with Premier Dan Andrews threatening to reimpose targeted lockdown measures.
“We’ve got a suppression strategy, not an elimination strategy from a national cabinet perspective on COVID-19, there will be outbreaks from time to time on the basis of that strategy,” he said.
“Industry must just be tearing its hair out.
“We’ve just got to find a pathway forward and we’ll just keep chipping away here because there is no other option.
“At some point, as an open economy, as an open society, we need to have open borders.”
